What Is Fantasy Playhouse?

"It shall be the purpose of Fantasy Playhouse Children's Theater to develop, foster,
and encourage the education, interest and ability of the children of Huntsville and
North Alabama in creative theater arts and crafts." --from the Fantasy charter

Productions
Now celebrating its 46th year of continuous service, Fantasy Playhouse Children's Theater has presented quality live theater for three generations of residents of North Alabama and Southern Tennessee. Every production gives 9-10 performances to sold-out houses in the Von Braun Center Playhouse. The three regular season productions plus an annual production of A Christmas Carol are performed in front of an audience of 12,000 people yearly. Renewing season ticket holders account for most of the annual ticket sales and are spread across 47 different ZIP codes.

Backstage
Fantasy is an all volunteer organization. It takes many people giving long hours to produce a show of the quality that audiences have come to expect from Fantasy. Fortunately, we have never run out of volunteers or an audience to appreciate those efforts. Upon watching a Fantasy production, one is aware of the great deal of effort and practice by the actors on stage. Even greater is the amount of work behind the scenes: countless volunteer hours are spent in costume and set construction, make up and hair, ticket sales, technical lighting, sound and special effects. Many people in the Huntsville area are introduced to the art of stagecraft through Fantasy Playhouse and for most it becomes a labor of love.

Academy
A professional staff of teachers and administrators offer affordable, year-round, personalized instruction in the dramatic arts for preschool children, K-12 and adults. Students learn many of the skills needed to earn parts in future productions or simply help in overcoming shyness and developing communication skills. The Fantasy Playhouse Academy of Theatre offers a safe and nuturing environment for students to come, to learn, to be exposed to live theater, to be challenged to perform and to expand their horizons.

Community
Fantasy Playhouse is a member of The Arts Council, a parent organization for many arts groups in Huntsville, Alabama. Huntsville possesses an extremely active, rich and dynamic arts community: many of those active in Fantasy Playhouse also participate in productions by other groups. This leads to sharing of talent and ideas between groups, to the advantage of the entire arts community. Fantasy is dedicated to exposing all children to the magical world of live theater. One program in which we are particularly proud to participate is the Arts Council's Making the Arts Grow In Children (MAGIC) Program where Fantasy offers groups of economically disadvantaged children access to many of our dress rehearsal productions free of charge. In addition, Fantasy lends costumes and stage props to area high schools for their own dramatic productions. An annual cash scholarship is available for outstanding college bound students who have participated in any aspect of Fantasy Playhouse either on stage or behind the scenes. Information about this award is available through all local high school counselors.

Our New Home
Over the years, Fantasy has made its home in many different facilities rented from the City of Huntsville. After 37 years of being shunted through 6 different facilities, Fantasy has finally made a home of our own. In the spring of 1997 Fantasy purchased the former Eagles' Aerie building at 3312 Long Avenue and transformed it into The Fantasy Center for the Arts This 10,000 square foot space has now been renovated to suit our needs of rehearsal space, office space, areas for costume construction and storage and Academy classes. We are also able to rent rehearsal space to other eligible arts groups. The building was purchased for $265,000 with modifications costing an additional $151,000. For the first time in its nearly 40 year history, Fantasy Playhouse has a home that children are proud to enter, one that provides adequate parking in a safe neighborhood. Many volunteer hours have been spent -and continue to be spent- making this facility as magical as the plays we produce. Please come by for a tour!
